Shapeshifting Concoctions

About 2 or 3 weeks ago I started to raise my Artificer crafting discipline in hopes that I would some day craft a super ascended Staff for my promising mesmer. Following step-by-step the amazing guide on gw2crafts I got to 400 in no time (the going gets tough just about then, but that's for another article to deal with ;-)). Something that impressed me in the entire process is the number and variety of Potions an Artificer can concoct. Literally, there's a potion suitable for encountering any type of enemy: anti-Centaur, anti-Svanir, anti-Ooze, anti-Ogre, anti- anti- anti-anything. However their use is not limited to extermination amplifiers. Their most spectacular application is no doubt the numerous transformations they inflict on their consumer! These are accomplished by a sub-category of potions, called Tonics. In this article then I decided to go into tonics as well as the effects of their consumption on your stomach, your appearance and to those around you ;-)

Tonics then are a special category of Potions - at least from an Artificer's point of view. According to the wiki they are "consumables that transform the player's model into a different model specified by the tonic used". On that page we also read that there are different types of tonic (e.g. Endless and normal ones) as well as many ways to acquire them. Let's look at all of that in details: the how's, the where's, the why's but also... the when's!

I say we start with some numbers, for an appetizer!
When the game was released a player had to their disposition no less than sixty-three (63) tonics to choose from! The introduction of laurels added one more, the (endless) Mystery Cat Tonic – one of my personal favorite in the game. In the course of the year each 'holiday' release (e.g. Halloween, Wintersday, etc) was accompanied by their own festive tonics, further increasing the initial tally. Today a player may choose among 90 different tonics! I bet that it had never crossed your mind they are that many. Before greed grabs you by the hair I should give you a fair warning: you cannot acquire all of them! Unfortunately. Some of them (just a few, thank Dwayna) are available only during the aforementioned 'holiday' releases. Others are random drops (from chests, mainly) while some may only be acquired -again with a probability- through the Mystic Forge.

A collection of Tonics!

Since I brought it up, let's take a general look at the various means of tonic acquisition. The less guaranteed way then is opening some of the most common 'boxes' in the game: Black Lion Chests & Lost Orrian Boxes. It is absolutely random whether we will find a tonic in them, however we may also be pleasantly surprised to discover the Endless version of it inside! These last ones are of exotic quality and their distinctiveness -as well as their value!- lies in the fact that they can be used unlimited times, i.e. they are not consumed upon use. Priceless.

A second means of acquisition, this one totally direct and guaranteed though, is through purchase from specific NPCs. Merchants, laurel vendors and even 'renown heart' NPCs (karma vendors) scattered throughout Tyria sell these valuable consumables. Additionally, some of the latter may also sell the recipe that will allow an Artificer to learn how to produce the respective tonic. In general, all craftable tonics in the game are only concocted by Artificers. Furthermore, there are plenty of tonics that any of us can make, regardless of crafting discipline, in the Mystic Forge. Unfortunately though, all tonics created in the Forge are automatically account bound :-(

In addition to the above two sources, one may randomly receive a tonic in their dungeon runs (final boss chests). What's more, during the celebration of some events (like Halloween) or Living Story episodes, one may see recipes for Artificers drop. These can possibly be found on the Trading Post too, if you're lucky. Finally, there's the Watchknight Tonic (Endless/exotic) which is a special tonic in all aspects. One received this as a reward for the 'Queen's Jubilee' Living World release meta-achievement. But this is not the only reason why it is special: it is not merely a transformation potion but one of the only two 'combat transformations' in the game. In other words, it permits its user to fight in the open world using their skills normally, despite being transformed! I will not tell you, yet, which the other combat transformation is; I will keep it a secret to make sure you will read through the rest of my article with increased interest :-P

In the tables that follow I list the different tonics in the game today, categorized according to their 'quality': Basic, Fine, Masterwork, Rare & Exotic. For each one, wherever applicable, I provide additional information about where or how one can acquire them. Feast on them!

  • Mystery tonics: there are 3 variations which share the same name but not the same icon, nor do they cause the same transformation:

Mystery Tonic (beast)   The ‘beast’ type – randomly transforms your character to an animal.

Mystery Tonic (forest)   The ‘forest’ type – randomly transforms your character to a tree (many forms).

Mystery Tonic (furniture)   The ‘furniture’ type – randomly transforms your character to a furniture (many forms).

  • All three mystery tonic types are created by Artificers, using specific recipes and each recipe yields 3 tonics of the respective type. They may also be found (randomly) inside Black Lion Chests too. The most commonly used –and by far more useful to have/craft- is the ‘beast’ type one. This is due to the fact that it is the ONLY type that can be used in the Mystic Forge to create all the other Basic rarity tonics! Unfortunately, all of them are account bound.
  • Out of the 37 total ‘basic’ tonics, 27 are crafted in the Forge and are, by default, account bound. They all require 2 Mystery Tonics of the ‘beast’ type – see above.

Fine tonic (1)

That’s right, there’s only one. Not enough to list it on its own table now, is it?

  • Potion of Hylek Transformation: you buy it from Organizer Aerixx [heart NPC] in Brisban Wildlands, Venlin Vale, after doing his chores.

Masterwork tonics (23)

Grawl Snowman tonic

crafted by Artificers with a recipe bought from Hunter Glynis [heart NPC] in Oros Spurs, Snowden Drifts

Hazmat Suit Transformation tonic

sold by Agent Jaren [merchant] in Blazeridge Steppes, Relliatus Canyon, Brandview WP, after the event

Multicolored Ooze tonic

discovered recipes (Artificer)

Plant Dog Transformation tonic

drops (randomly) from Black Lion Chests

Potion of Ascalonian Mages

crafted by Artificers with a recipe bought from Lieutenant Tyler [heart NPC] in Bento Canyon, Fields of Ruin

Potion of Ettin Essence

sold by karma vendor [heart NPC] Researcher Bramm, in Demon Maw, Lornar’s Pass

Ruminant tonic

discovered recipes (Artificer)

Candy Corn Elemental tonic

crafted by Artificers; the respective recipe can only be purchased (with karma) from Merchant NPCs standing next to the crafting station while these holiday events are running

Concentrating Halloween tonic

Spooky Skeleton tonic

Spooky Zombie tonic

random mob drop during the ‘Halloween’ event

Reindeer tonic

random mob drop during the ‘Wintersday’ event

Snowman tonic

random mob drop during the ‘Wintersday’ event

Toy Golem tonic

crafted in the Mystic Forge, with a (low) chance of producing the Endless version of it. Each forging yields a Small Wintersday Gift that contains 3 tonics plus the Frame used, allowing us to repeatedly attempt to create the endless version

Toy Soldier tonic

Toy Ventari tonic

Festive Golem tonic

Plush Griffon tonic

Princess Doll tonic

  • The 3 “endless Toy” tonics and the 2 “endless Plush” ones are the only ‘endless’ tonics in the game that are of Rare quality instead of Exotic.
  • Incidentally, the Potion of Ascalonian Mages is the second, of only two, ‘combat transformation’ potions in the game. You already know which is the other one ;-)

Epilogue (...not!)

When I set out to look for information about the tonics I could have never imagined how exciting my journey would be. The pleasure lied of course not in reading the books (see ‘wiki’) but in wandering around Tyria’s most isolated and strange corners! Being an Artificer meant that I could already make some tonics myself, however the most interesting recipes were in the possession of certain NPCs who demanded some sort of labor in exchange for the knowledge (being renown hearts themselves ^^). The satisfaction that accompanies the acquisition, via labor, of an exotic tonic or the recipe that will initiate you to a new concoction is indescribable! I shall never forget the effort we made, me and 4 members from my Guild that happily answered to my cry for help, to assist poor Blubloop escape the Broodmother that hunted him, preventing him from reuniting with his people across the strait! When we finally succeeded, we stashed on supplies from the dear Quaggan and posed for a commemorative screenshot that the moment called for!

One of the people in this picture asked me, in the heat of the battle, why I was so eager to help Blubloop particularly this day since –as I realized- poor him faces that exact same dire situation every so often. When I replied, demanding confidentiality, that I was doing research on the game’s tonics, she was both excited and surprised. She told me that she had, as a matter of fact, on that very same day, posted on her blog site about this subject - tonics! I must admit that my initial feelings were those of utter disappointment: so much trouble and expenses and time wasted, if someone had already talked/wrote about what I intended to... My disappointment however was quick to turn to pleasant surprise upon reading her post, as I saw that she was dealing with an aspect which never crossed my mind! We decided then, in mutual agreement, that it would be both fruitful and fortunate that the two texts, hers and mine, be complementary to each other. Therefore I recommend that the hungry reader, yearning for exhaustive knowledge, haste to continue their journey with Nadine's (aka Paeroka) wonderful post over at the site of Nerdy Bookahs! I will not give away what it is about - I shall only say that the application in question will be of use to you... approximately every 8 days ;-)

Re: Shapeshifting Concoctions

Here's a little story of mine when it comes to tonics. There was a merchant in Lion's Arch once that sold me a polyjuice tonic that would transform me into a beautiful Norn called Freya Boingsdottir. Apparently though, the hair that he had put in it when he mixed the ingredients together belonged to a Charr. Ever since I'm stuck to this current form of mine.
